Nuwara Eliya, the city of light is the capital of Nuwara Eliya District in Central Province of Sri Lanka. Having very low temperatures around whole year Nuwara Eliya is dearly visited by every Sri Lankan and foreigner once they have space in their plans. Picturesque mountains and breezy cool air in this area is regularity. The area is swarmed with tourism hot spots and this is a must visit are in Sri Lanka for nature lovers. Victoria Park, Hakgala Botanical gardens, Horton planes, Gregory Lake and several Waterfalls like St Clair Falls, Lovers leap falls are the main places of interest in Nuwara Eliya.
The tallest mountain of Sri Lanka, Piduruthalagala is in the vicinity of the Nuwara Eliya city. Vicotoria Park is a must visit place in Nuwara Eliya which was established in the 1897 for the commemoration of 60th year completion of Queen Elisabeth’s throne. The “Nuwara Eliya” means the “City of Light” but it is also the city of flowers as well. The Victoria Park will be covered with roses and various colorful marvelous flowers in the flower season of Sri Lanka. And most of these flowers do not grow elsewhere in the country.
Hakgala Bottanical Garden is a little different place. Rather than having flowers all around, the garden comprises rare and so much precious plants of different areas of the world. The folk tales say that this place was originally used by Great King of Ancient Sri Lanka, Ravana as his herbal garden. Horton Planes is another must visit in the Nuwara Eliya district. Initially it was called Mahaweli Planes and later a British governor named it as Horton Planes. 7200 feet higher than the sea level this 700 acre size giant plane harbors some invaluable plant and animal life unique to this area. Also there are few special places such as World’s End and Little World’s End as well as Baker’s fall in the hike that runs across this large flat land on the hill tops.
