Matara Travel Guide
Matara is a coastal city surrounded by spectacular beaches and many places to visit. Because of that it has become one of the major tourist attraction sites in Sri Lanka in recent times. Matara is located in the southern coastal belt near Galle, some 160kms away from the Colombo capital. A large river named Nilwala (meaning bluish clouds) flows across this great city.
Matara has few of the countries’ best beaches that including Mirissa beach and Polhena Reef. There are numerous small beaches and many hotels to accommodate visitors along the beautiful coastal line from Galle to Matara. Star Fort is a nice place with a mind blowing view which gained its name due to its shape. There is a Fort in Matara as in Galle which was built by Dutch. But is it much smaller than Galle Fort. Star Fort was designed to stand in the way of enemy who were attacking the main Fort in Matara.
Weherahena Temple is located in the Matara city limits. Originally it was built as an underground temple for the Buddhist people. But now it has become one astonishing place with an underground temple and a giant size Buddha statue. Also the higher buildings at Weherahena Temple bring about a unique view that extends many miles in to the lands far away. Kushtarajagala is a place of archeological interest and is locted few kilo meters Western to the Matara city at Weligama. There is an enormous statue of Avalokitheshwara Buddha. Other than these there are many places near Matara such as Crow Island, Light House, Mulkirigala Rock Temple that is worth a visit.
